Live at Donte’s

I was cleaning out my garage when I found three cassette tapes that read “02/13/1983/Donte’s”. February 13th, 1983 was a very big night for me. I was booked to perform on NPR’s Jazz Alive broadcast from legendary Los Angeles jazz club Donte’s with my musical partner, pianist and arranger Tom Garvin. I hadn’t seen these tapes in over 40 years and they had never been played. Jazz Alive was produced by the great Ben Sidran. Since I was a big fan of Ben, Jim Liska, a great friend who produced my first album Secret Fantasy (Palo Alto Records) introduced me to Ben that night. My mom and dad, my wife, my brother and his wife, my manager and lifetime friend, Ron Waldorf, and his wife were all at the broadcast, along with many friends who had followed me for years. It was a musical night that I’ll never forget.

I decided to listen to the tapes and remembered how special that performance was. I called my old friend, Mike Dion, who owns I.T.I. Records. He said, “Send it to me and I’ll give it a listen.” Mike loved it and I'm thrilled to share this live performance!

The players were Tom Garvin on piano, Tom Peterson on sax, Peter Donald on drums, and a young (19-year-old) man on bass who subbed for my regular bass player (John Heard) named John Patitucci. Tom Garvin has left this world. Peter Donald retired after a long, wonderful career. Tom Peterson is still a busy, working jazz musician after 20 years playing in the Johnny Carson Tonight Show Band. John Patitucci is John Patitucci!

None of this would have happened without my incredible, supportive wife, Elaine, my two fantastic daughters, Katie and Megan, and everyone who has helped me along the journey. I hope you can feel the love and enjoy the music.
