WINDS OF CHANGE

From the end of their Roman rule, Britain had become an Anglo-Saxon settlement, which was a  gathering of diverse Germanic peoples, that spread throughout England and some of southern Scotland.

The religion of the time was Catholic Christianity, with monks and priests controlling much of the daily life.

The Anglo-Saxons battled amongst the Romans left behind and the indigenous people throughout parts of Northern Britain, including Wales, Scotland and even Ireland.

However, by 800, the raids by the Vikings or Danes had become increasing and many of the tribes or kingdoms within England had to join together to overcome the Norsemen, who now controlled many parts of the separated territories.

The Norsemen's belief was based on Old Norse religion, known as Norse paganism.  It was based on a Germanic religion, in which the Vikings practiced paganism and it's polytheistic religion, a belief in various gods and goddesses, such as Odin and Thor.

However, by the time of the Normans, in 1066, who came from France and were descendants of the Vikings, the religion of England had become Christianity no matter what descendent you came from - hence - WINDS OF CHANGE.
